Totally Addicted To Social Media
Question
I am totally addicted to social media.. Even though I don't find it useful for me, I keep on surfing. Now, I realize that I have less concentration towards work and I am struggling to come out of it as I sub-consciously start using it.
Counselor response
We are glad you are reaching out for some support with this issue. Addictions can be very harmful in so many ways. Your addiction to social media is posing a threat to you and possibly your job. We know that addictions can be hard to break but not impossible. There are two simple rules to follow when trying to be responsible with this type of addiction.
1. Give it a rest. If you find that you are constantly checking your account, it’s time to start weaning yourself from it. The more you check it, the more difficult it become to walk away. You have to allow yourself time to be in reality and do your work. Set times for yourself to check the accounts throughout the day but limit the time. For instance, only check it 4 time a day and for 15 -30 minutes. Slowly wean yourself down to 15-20 minutes and only 3 times a day. And go from there.
2. Be realistic. Keep in mind that you need time to do work. If you lose your job, you will have more problems. You certainly don’t want that. There isn’t anything you are going to miss on social media either. If it is that big of news, you will see it in two hours or tomorrow. Be real about the time you spend. Being on it too much can cause some feelings of depression and you certainly don’t want that either. Be smart and realistic. Set your timers and set yourself up with realistic goals.
We hope this has been helpful. Give yourself time to work through this. Give it a few weeks and see if you can make some improvements. Our counselors are here anytime.
Take care,
