Struggling With Bulimia
Question
Hi I'm struggling with bulimia wondering if someone would just want to talk to me about it.
Counselor response
We’re so glad that you’re reaching out to talk about this. Eating disorders can be a difficult challenge to deal with and manage, and you definitely need support while you’re going through this. It takes a lot of courage to reach out about such difficult topics, and we’re so glad to be able to support you.
Eating disorders often center around negative thoughts, and the compulsive need to purge can be triggered by many things, such as anxiety. It is incredibly helpful to work with a therapist when struggling with an eating disorder, such as a cognitive behavioral therapist, who can help you to recognize triggers and change the negative thought patterns that accompany bulimia. Below I have posted some tips:
· Find out from your doctor what a healthy weight would be for your body type and regularly remind yourself that healthy is your goal.
· Resist the urge to diet or skip meals, which can trigger binge eating.
· Don't visit websites that advocate or glorify eating disorders.
· Identify troublesome situations that are likely to trigger thoughts or behaviors that may contribute to your bulimia and develop a plan to deal with them.
·Look for positive role models who can help boost your self-esteem.
·Find pleasurable activities and hobbies that can help distract you from thoughts about bingeing and purging.
·Build up your self-esteem by forgiving yourself, focusing on the positive, and giving yourself credit and encouragement.
We strongly encourage you to reach out to us further to speak directly to a counselor. Often times, speaking these thoughts out loud and hearing another’s response can open up possibilities for hope.
Thank you so much for taking this step for yourself. You are not alone! We hope you reach out for more support!
Sincerely,
Shannon, Counselor
