It Won't Stop

Question

I have been getting picked on and it won't stop. I've talked to people about it but it doesn't really help. I just want to talk to someone that will actually listen to me for once.

Counselor response

We are so glad that you came across our website and are reaching out for support. It can be very hard to deal with being picked on and we want you to know that we are here for you.

It sounds like you are really struggling.  Being picked on stinks.  It also sounds like you are pretty frustrated with the people that you have talked to about this.  Who have you tried to talk to about this? Ask yourself were they the right person to talk to?  Did they have the authority to make it stop?  Was I specific about what has been happening and honest about how it is making me feel?  Sometimes when we talk to adults and we are very general about what is going on and kind of sluff it off with an "I'm ok" when they ask how you are feeling about what happened, they do not realize the extent of the problem.

Here are some things that you can do:

1.  Try to avoid the people that are bothering you as much as possible. Moving away from the ones that are bullying you might be best so that you are not around it however if this is not possible telling a teacher or adult that can intervene right away.

2.  Keep a record of what is happening so you can show an adult the specifics about what is happening and that this is an ongoing issue.

3.  Try to find an adult who has the authority to help you with this, tell them how this is making you feel.  This could be a teacher, school counselor or a parent.  If you feel like you do not have anyone to talk to you can always call us - 1-800-448-3000.  We will listen to you.

Please take care and we look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Ashley– Counselor
