I Don't Want To Lose Her

Question

I'm scared that I'm gonna lose my significant other. Whenever she talks to other guys I get bad anxiety attack . I trust her it's just that I have had a bad history with relationships and I don't want to lose her. She tells me everything will be okay and I hope it will be. I just don't know what to do. I don't want to be scared anymore.

Counselor response

We hate to say it, but your relationship could be in danger if your anxiety continues.  Jealousy and mistrust can destroy a relationship faster than anything else.  If you are suspicious of everything she does and become upset, she may tire of this and question why your relationship should continue.

If you truly want to get over this, you have got to work really hard at it.  In fact we have often heard from others that after failed relationships, it sometimes takes intervention by a counselor or therapist to sort of re-program their thinking.  Until you can find that kind of support to help, try creating a plan for each time you start to feel suspicious.  Engage in physical exercise, go for a run, lift weights, something.  Perhaps you could say a prayer or listen to your favorite up-beat music to distract yourself and your thoughts.  Do something to detour those negative thoughts and feelings.

We know this is a tough situation and you are not the only one who has struggled with it.  Be strong and stay determined to make that change within yourself.

Sincerely,

Pat, Counselor
