Can I Run Away?
Question
Hey. I'm 17 and I was wondering... can I run away? The home I'm staying at is verbally abusive if I stay with a friend can they get in trouble?
Counselor response
It sounds like you are going through a lot of ups and downs right now with your family and that can be overwhelming. Thank you for reaching out for help. Sometimes relationships with family members go through valleys, and it can be very difficult to navigate through the problems.
Not knowing where you live, it is difficult to give you a local runaway resource; however, you can always call us and we can give you local and national referrals. As far as your friend, it is possible that your friend and their parents could get in trouble due to not having permission for you to live there.
If things at your home are so stressful that you are considering running away maybe it is time to talk to an adult about this. Talking to someone that you trust could help you to find ways to cool things down at home so it does not continue to be so stressful for you. You can always call our hotline - 1-800-448-3000 and talk with one of our counselors. We are really good listeners and might be able to help you find better ways to get along with your parents.
To start, try these tips. They might not make all the stress you are feeling go away, but they might give you some ideas of how to make it better.
We look forward to hearing back from you again.
Take care and keep safe,
Nicole, Counselor
